alanabloomsperpetualangryface:So today at Monster Mania I had the good fortune and the high holy privilege of meeting Mads Mikkelsen, who is the softest, kindest, cuddliest human I have ever seen. So we all mill into the room and we sit down and for awhile my best friend and I just kind of sit there, awestricken while we watch him interact. He’s smiley and absolutely cheerful, hops up whenever a picture is requested and starts each greeting with a handshake and a “Hi, I’m Mads,” as though we all had no idea why the fuck we were there and who this Danish prince was.So I brought my copy of Silence of the Lambs. When I was ten years old I learned that my father’s favorite book series was the Thomas Harris Hannibal series. In an attempt to bond and to connect on some level, I set out to read Silence of the Lambs. When I tried to speak with him about it I learned he’d never read them and it’d been untrue, but it didn’t matter. “Dr. Lecter’s eyes are maroon and they reflect the light in pinpoints of red. Sometimes the points of light seem to fly like sparks to his center. His eyes held Starling whole.” was my first true bit of inspiration to write. Hannibal Lecter was my best friend when I was younger, which sounds absurd but is true, and today the man who cultivated and truly embodies a character who gave me a lifelong love of complex grey anti villains signed my favorite sentence in my first copy of Silence of the Lambs. When I approached him with a genuine cheerful curiosity he said, “What have you got there?” and I set forth the page, pointing it all out. So he signed over my very favorite sentence and proceeded to sign ‘Hannibal’ just under his signature. It sounds goofy, but it feels like my copy was signed by my childhood best friend. That’s not all! I asked for a selfie. Straight up, front facing camera selfies, and after my first excited one (and a little self-convincing) I said to him “Would you mind one with the Hannibal expression? I mean, as flat as possible. It’s just— your micro-expressions, I admire them so much, and it would mean so much to me to go for that with you”. His response was “That will be hard! I’m so happy— okay, I’ll try, I’ll try”. And so we did it!I stood there and bantered about people I loved, things I loved, and his overwhelming appreciation was so palpable. Like, this guy loves that people admire his talent. He loves the difference he makes, you can just fucking tell. I told him I had forsaken Anthony Hopkins for him, to which he responded, “Ah, Anthony Hopkins only had fifteen minutes to win an Oscar,” and I shot right back, “And look at what you do in forty-five every week!”Today I met my childhood best friend and a man who loved and appreciated every passionate little fan in that room. And I felt like I really met my hero. -- source link
