The art of Paul McCartney’s album covers.McCartney (1970). Cover photo by Linda McCartney of red cherries surrounding a bowl of cherry juice. McCartney was Paul’s first solo album; a private affair, recorded at home during a low period in his life. Promotional copies came with a self-penned interview that more or less ended The Beatles right there and then, much to John’s fury, as he had wanted to be the one to end it. The album is a strange, adventurous thing, full of half-songs, sound effects, jams, and melodic instrumentals, and among all that, a peacock among odd birds, the great “Maybe I’m Amazed”.Red Rose Speedway (1973). The cover is a collage by pop artist, Eduardo Paolozzi, featuring a photo of a Harley Davidson engine by Linda. I’ve always found the cover quite ugly honestly, but I’m including it here because of the connection with Paolozzi.Towards the end of his life, John would remark that the last album by Paul that he had ever listened to was “the one where he had a rose in his mouth”. Bull, of course. There’s evidence that he once sent his personal assistant to get him a copy of the 1979 Wings album, Back to the Egg.Band on the Run (1973). Photo by Clive Arrowsmith, concept by Paul McCartney. The gang of convicts, caught in a prison searchlight, consists of: talk show host Michael Parkinson; entertainer Kenny Lynch; Paul; actor James Coburn; politician/broadcaster (and Sigmund’s grandson) Clement Freud; Linda McCartney; actor Christopher Lee; Wings member Denny Laine; and future boxing champion, John Conteh.Tug of War (1982). Designed by Richard Manning (of Hipgnosis), art by Brian Clarke, photo by Linda McCartney. One of my favorite albums—I’ve always liked the sound of it, and the soul. It has two of my favorite songs, “Wanderlust” and “Dress Me Up As A Robber”, which not many people know; plus Paul’s heartbreaking ode to John Lennon, “Here Today”. -- source link
