leftboogerarbiter:leftboogerarbiter:thehighpriestofreverseracism:blackqueerblog:Exactlyyyyy there are so many aspect to corona virus bruhh. Its crazy. Like also think about the ppl in flint who stilll dont have clean water. And having to deal with the virus. Like how do u even properly wash your hands.damny’all are fucking incredible.[Image Description: 3 tweets by twitter user @cerebralistic, or Mary.1. a quote-tweet by Mary of a Yahoo article titled “Facing coronavirus while deaf and blind: ‘Everything relies on touch’” with an image of four figures wearing masks or bandanas to cover their nose and mouth. Mary says: I didn’t even consider this perspective. Oh my goodness.2. a tweet by Mary of a screenshot image from an ABC news article that reads: “I lost a friend two weeks ago to COVID and she was very young - early 30s - and it kind of prompted me to go ahead and get my advance (medical) directive and my will together,” she said.” under this text is a photo of a black feminine individual accompanied by the caption: “PHOTO: Tyler Samuel, 28, of Nashville, Tenn., says she has drafted a will and advance medical directive out of concerns that she might contract the novel coronavirus and become gravely ill.”Mary’s text attached to this article screenshot reads: Tyler Samuel was born with a condition that made her lose her sight and hearing. This is gut-wrenching! (broken heart emoji).3. It is absolutely able-bodied privilege to live your life not having to consider how touch could be lethal to you because you are deafblind. The privilege could not be more blinding. We MUST take self-isolation, etc. seriously y’all./end image description.]on the similar vein of these tweets: it’s absolutely able-bodied privilege that you shitheads are reblogging this around without image descriptions for the blind community & blind users on this site. stop being hypocritical self-righteous pricks and make content about disabled people accessible for disabled people.“the privilege could not be more blinding” is also ableist so don’t be spreading that around like it’s witty and poetic. shut up.so much of this (the original tweets and the replies to this post) have been rubbing me the wrong way. the ableism of how the original post is inaccessible, the ableist language used in the tweet, and the inspiration-porn responses people are having in the notes….its all a bummer.to be clear, all of us should absolutely be taking social isolation seriously, primarily because of the disabled and marginalized. but yall could also be using these experiences to learn more about those with disabilities, and not in a way that is fetishizing or othering, but in a way where you develop true understanding of other people’s lives. i looked into the original article, including Tyler Samuel (whose blurb is taken out of context for how gut wrenching it is) and learned from that same article she works as a pediatric surgery coordinator and she is a freelance opera singer. her quote just before the screenshotted one is:“In my youth, I just really worried that I wouldn’t find that independence. And when you do find it, you don’t want to lose it…And so for it to be kind of chipped away is – it kinda lowers your self-esteem.”point being….DeafBlind folks don’t exist for you to suddenly think about with horror and pity during a pandemic. they are out there living their lives, privately, professionally, just as you do. they’re people. they’re not sitting in a dark room waiting for their handler to tell them what time it is, which is what the responses to this article would make you believe. yes, disabled people deserve access, of course we do. accessibility should be on the forefront of our minds and agendas ALL THE TIME. but disabled people don’t exist for you to be inspired by or pity. they are people and deserve to be viewed holistically, as we all do. here’s some DeafBlind perspectives i want to include so that this post isn’t speaking for that community more than it already is.Angie C.
