thebestpersonherelovesbucky:The knock on Sam’s door startles him. He’s not expecting anyone, not today. What’s even more unexpected is who’s on the other side. Sam steps out immediately, pleasantly surprised by his visitor. Old habits have him saluting, even though he’s no longer on active duty. “Put your hand down,” Rhodey laughs. “Give me a hug.”Sam laughs along and moves in to hug his former commanding officer, his teacher, his friend—his mentor. When he pulls away, Sam finds the same grin on his face pulled up on Rhodey’s.“What’re you doing here, Rhodey?” He asks. “No call or nothing? Just show up? That’s how you drop in on a friend?”But Rhodey doesn’t quite answer that. Instead, he walks to his car, waving for Sam to follow him. “Come on, kid. Let’s get a drink.”A nervous bubble pops in Sam’s belly. The last time Rhodey took him out for a drink was after Riley died. They hadn’t seen each other much afterward, and Sam was only now realizing that he’d been avoiding him. Rhodey reminded him of Riley, of the wing-man he’d lost right in front of his eyes. “I remember when you and Riley were just getting your wings.” Rhodey suddenly interrupts Sam’s thoughts. “Ya’ll learned quick.”Sam can’t help but chuckle. That’s always how he put it when he was training them. ‘Getting their wings’. “How could we not?” He scoffs. “It’s not like you went easy on us.”“Hey, if you two wanted easy, you shouldn’t have agreed to learn to fly without an aircraft. Now’s not the time to complain about my methods.”“Who’s complaining? I qualified for Project Falcon. Only two of us did. I met my best friend and had the honor of being trained by Lt. Col. James Rhodes. It changed my life.”“You don’t need to suck up to me anymore.”They both laugh at that and remain silent until they get to the bar. Once there, they make a bit of small talk before Rhodey makes the face that Sam recognizes as getting down to business. “So…” Rhodey stretches his lips. “I put your name in a while ago. You’ve been under review.”“Review? Review for what?”“You were high on their list anyway, but it was your work with Captain Rogers that really convinced them.”Sam rattles his head. He and Steve were planning to leave soon, so he can’t imagine what Rhodey could be talking about now.“Convinced who, Rhodey?”Rhodey slides a manila folder across the table. “Let’s talk about the Avengers, Sam. And making you an official member of the team.”Sam can’t help the grin that pulls the corner of his lips up into a full, excited smile. -- source link
