ajanigoldmane:flavoracle:karn-libated:flavoracle:sarpadianempiresvol-viii:The first legendary Bear is here! (Source)Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the proud lineage that Goreclaw represents? Because for those who are newer or may not follow the story… Surrak Dragonclaw once punched a bear with his bare fists. The bear survived, but it gave up and that’s how he earned his name. But that was in the “Khans of Tarkir” timeline, which doesn’t actually exist anymore because of time-travel shenanigans. So in the current “Dragons of Tarkir” timeline, we have Surrak, the Hunt Caller… …who took things up a notch… …by punching a dragon (and killed it.) And then in Unstable, things were taken to an even greater extreme with Really Epic Punch… …which gave us a Bear-Dragon punching a different dragon (who presumably deserved it.) AND NOW!!! Not only do we finally get our first legendary bear creature (which bear fans have been requesting for a long time) we get an epic Tarkir bear that cares about creatures with power 4 or greater, and it’s punching someone, and the flavor text seems to imply she does that A LOT! This is a FLAVOR WIN on so many levels, and I could not be happier with the long-game payoff! Well done, @wizardsmagic!!! Ummmmmmmmmm the bear didn’t surviveHis pauldrons are a bisected bear faceTo get the full story, I highly recommend reading Awakening the Bear by Jennifer Clarke Wilkes (seriously, it’s fantastic and you should read it right now.) I won’t spoil the ending, but the reason that Surrak wears the bearskin on his shoulders and gauntlets is NOT because he killed it with his punch. The real reason is WAY better. (Seriously, go read it!) The cards don’t lie. That bear is EPIC. Dave thank you for letting me deny that a bear had to get punched and dieI mean, I understand it’s easy to make mistakes where Magic lore is concerned, and I can see why the art and flavor text of the cards lead people to make the wrong assumptions. But fans have been misunderstanding the Bear Punching Saga for years, and I feel like it’s time we set the record straight and collectively stop spreading that misinformation. The idea that Surrak would kill such a mighty animal just to show off how tough and macho he could be is untrue, unfair, and unbearable. -- source link
