John Brown (Detail) for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Some years ago, I was commissioned by my friend, AD Kevin Brimmer to create a series of illustrations for the entire season of the LOKC. Theater, drama, opera, the chance to work on a bit of hand lettering and design- count me in. Depending on who you talk to, John Brown was both famous and infamous. Credited or blamed with being the spark that set an already polarized nation into Civil War, Brown believed it was his divine providence to free the slaves imprisoned by their Southern slave-owners. His plan- to capture the Confederate armory at Harper’s Ferry so that he might arm slaves to overthrow their captors through the American South. As Brown likened himself to Moses, I chose to show him here in front of the burning (cotton) bush, as hands reach up for salvation. source: www.sterlinghundley.com -- source link
