Bradenstoke Priory, Wiltshire A priory founded in 1142 and closed in 1539. A large part of the structure plus a medieval tithe barn survived in use as a house/farm until 1929. William Randolph Hearst (the newspaper owning fascist who supported Hitler) bought the priory and sneakily demolished it, mostly for building materials, before anyone could do anything to stop it. Parts of the structure were reused at a medieval castle he bought in Wales (St Donat’s, the timber roof in the hall shown above came from the priory), which he spent a fortune on and then rarely visited. The tithe barn was shipped off to California and left abandoned in crates. All that’s left now is the wrecked vaulted undercroft and the corner tower with some walling. -- source link
