english-history-trip:Henry the Nerd ThirdSo Henry III named his first son Edward. Sounds pretty normal. Until you realize Edward was in no way a French name. Henry picked it because he was a huge fanboy of Edward the Confessor, the last(ish) Saxon king of England. It was a weirdo name. It would be like the Queen being an LotR fan and naming her kid Glorfindel. Lots of weirdo foreigner names became as English as Yorkshire pudding by being attached to monarchs. No Englishwomen were going around with the name Victoria until she was the queen. There were no Ruperts until Prince Rupert’s nephew became George I. Such is the evolution of the patchwork that is the English language. -- source link
