However, the royal baggage train, which included the Crown Jewels, took the direct route and was washed away by the incoming tide.The loss of the Crown Jewels of England dealt John a terrible blown and both his physical and mental health were badly affected. Sometime in September or early October, John contracted dysentery. He died on October 18 or 19, 1216 at Newark Castle on the border between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. John was buried in Worcester Cathedral, in the city of Worcester.After John’s death, Prince Louis continued to press his claim to the English crown.
