Henri, the cynical profligate, changed as soon as he meets her. Henry beg his mother, Catherine de Médicis, to cancel Marie’s wedding with the Prince of Condé, telling his love and sufferings. But Catherine is angry and advance the wedding. Henri doesn’t hide neither his despair, nor his will of revenge. The two lovers write to each others, see each one in secret, are happy like never before. But in september 1576, Henri becomes King of Poland and must join his far away kingdom, unknowing if he could ever see her again. Marie is inconsolable. One year after, King Charles IX dies and Henri becomes King of France. As soon as he learns the news, he wants nothing but comes back, hugs Marie and marry her as soon as her previous wedding is annuled. His mother advises him to wait a little longer in Lyon. Henri obeys and writes Marie a love letter she will never received. On 30th october, Marie dies while giving birth to a little girl named Catherine. Catherine de Médicis is informed but doesn’t know how to tell her son the news. Finally, she put the letter amongs other papers the King must read. The morning after, while seating, Henri’s eyes fall on the letter. He stays silent without moving, without talking for a minute. He turns pale and faints. For days, fever seizes him and Henri let himself go to his unbearable pain. Forgetting who he is, he hits his head on walls, cries, screams, refuses to eat. Nothing and nobody can help him. On Christmas Eve, he asks to organize a procession. Everyone must participate. He walks ahead of them, naked feet, head hiding under a hood. Nothing matters anymore. The kingdom takes fright. His mother decides to get him married. He starts to refuse all the princesses until he chooses Louise de Vaudémont who looks like the deceased Marie.
