The Mir diamond mine in Russia, over 1,700 feet deep. The open-pit part of the mine is no longer active, although underground excavation continues. It was excavated in the 1950s, despite temperatures so cold that oil would freeze. Millions of carats a year of diamond were excavated at the mine’s peak.
