What does independence look like in 2016 and how are we fighting for it? Inspired by the final days
What does independence look like in 2016 and how are we fighting for it? Inspired by the final days of Agitprop! and our refreshed American Art collection, we expand Independence Day to question what it means to be “American” and celebrate art and activism that calls for greater liberation.Musical highlights of the night include a set by DJ Chela celebrating sounds from the Americas and Brooklyn and protest anthems with Pablo Helguera’s project El Club de Protesta. Propose solutions to the most pressing social problems of our time with Theatre of the Oppressed NYC and deepen your political engagement with art-making by For Freedoms, the first artist-run Super PAC. Catch a performance by Bread and Puppet Theater that grapples with the upcoming election and Dennis Redmoon Darkeem whose work questions cultural and racial stereotypes. If you’re a film lover, check out highlights from the LGBTQ New Americans oral history project and participate in a conversation with Brooklyn Community Pride Center and Immigration Equality about the experiences of queer immigrants in New York. In anticipation of our summer sports photography exhibition, Who Shot Sports, check out Keepers of the Game (Judd Ehrlich, 2016, 82 min.) which follows a girls high school lacrosse team blazing the way for the next generation of Native women in this sacred game traditionally reserved for men.Come early for a behind the scenes look at the Luce Center for American Art with Connie Choi, Assistant Curator of American Art, to find out how we used our nation’s most pressing issues as a framework to engage with the past.Full lineup and RSVP here.Posted by Lauren A Zelaya -- source link
