copperbadge:theprimalfeed:This is a wonderful meme… But I want to put some reality to this.We run a mental health office. We believe that we created a great system, that is built for success. We have grown exponentiality over the last five years. But with that, This set of statistics.. Average Weekly Requests for Mental Health ServicesYear One - 5 per weekYear Two - 12 per weekYear Three - 22 per weekYear Four - 35 per weekYear Five - Last Week ————————– 52 Requests for assistance. We don’t have enough clinicians, we don’t have enough time. Just like our healthcare workers whom are overworked. Our Mental health workers are all joining the stressors of the pandemic. I actually looked into mental health services training a few months ago, because it seemed extremely obvious to me that mental health service providers were going to be heavily overloaded and in extremely short supply in 2021 and beyond, and I wondered if I could help. As I expected, it requires WAY more training than I would be capable of while also holding down a full time job, and way more time to complete than would allow me to be useful when it will be needed most. Which I think is good in many ways – it shouldn’t be easy to get a degree in Helping People Manage Their Mental Health, you should need a lot of training. I’m also not sure I’d be suited for it full-time, given my personality and temperament. But I keep thinking about it – not so much from a second-career standpoint (although that too) as from the standpoint of really wanting to help and seeing a concrete way to do it. To be a long-term (or even short-term) therapist requires long and intensive training, yes. But people who want to help might also look into what hot-lines are looking for help right now. Training to work a hot-line, to talk someone through an immediate crisis, may take just a month or three. It can be very intensive, if you’re working for a good one! A good hot-line training program should load you down with reading, and do role-plays with you, and have mentored sessions about what success or failure will sound like and how to keep yourself safe while you do this. But the prep-time is considerably shorter, and I can’t imagine that the hot-lines aren’t also extremely in demand right now. -- source link
