interretialia:AJASEJUEPHILOSOPHASTRA ILLUSTRANSYueAyaseIlluminating Philosopher-in-TrainingTranslation Notes:Ajase Jue is simply the Japanese name Ayase Yue Latinized.Philosophastra is the feminine form of philosophaster, “bad philosopher" or “pretender to philosophy" or “a petty or charlatan philosopher.“ The -aster (feminine -astra) suffix usually has a pejorative force, or, as William T. Stearn says in his book Botanical Latin, it indicates “incomplete likeness or inferiority, often used to distinguish a wild [plant] from a cultivated kind." Since filiastra means “stepdaughter,” and patraster means “father-in-law,“ the -aster and -astra suffixes can convey the idea of “almost, but not quite." Since these card titles have a element of dignity to them, and Yue doesn’t seem to be pretending to be a philosopher, philosophastra in Yue’s case seems to be saying that she is almost a full-fledged philosopher, but not quite. Illustrans is the present active participle of illustrare, “to illuminate.”Card from here. -- source link
