star–nymph:incorrect-dragon-age-quotes:DRAGON AGE FANDOM AWARDS NOMINEESyou all sent in your nominations and i have spoken individually with each nominee to ensure they are happy to participate! congrats to everyone nominated for the Dragon Age Fandom Awards! for categories with 5 or less nominees, i’ve decided to skip voting and announce all the nominees on the winners post. the nominees and link to the polls are under the cut. Keep readingOkay, look, I didn’t want to get into this. Genuinely. I knew from the second this whole awards situation came up this, at best, would be a naive attempt for positivity in the fandom and worse, blunt disregard of the issues inside of it for the sake of feeling good. But man, fucking, I can’t say quiet about something that morally makes my skin crawl. I knew the non-attempt at filtering the nominees at best would result in someone who has done some racist shit getting nominated on this thing. Yes, I’m talking about the author of The Lion and The Light. Yes, I realize there’s a moral dilemma in this fandom about hate reading her fic, but do I care at the fucking moment? No. People, particularly fans of color, have directly pointed out the racist tropes in her fic, have stated they are hurt by it, and instead of at least putting her off the list and considering their feelings for all of two goddamn seconds, you decided to keep her on.All for the sake of ‘fandom positivity’, huh? Look, I’m glad the nominees are getting recognized for their talents. There are some of my friends on these lists who deserve to be told they are beloved and respected, but I’m not going to steamroll over people of color just for their comfort. We ask how the hell do we make this fandom a better place? Start by listening to concerns fucking raised about certain users by people of color–real, living people of color, not fictional characters, who feel unsafe in the fandom–and not chalking it up to fandom drama. At this point it’s probably just time to recognize that a large portion of the DA fandom wants to keep it segregated. They might occasionally decide to include a person of color on their “good” list but only those who meet some kind of requirement known only to the Karen Club. And I know you all mean well speaking out on things like this, and I’ve certainly encouraged you to do so, but there comes a point where we need to stop giving them attention. At least publicly enough that it shows up on the dashes of the very fans of color who are being disenfranchised by the fandom. We’ve said all we need to say about this shitty fic. There are so many out there just like it (well maybe better written) that we don’t need to keep belaboring this one. I promise you, I can find you an even more horrifically racist DA fic by just looking for one where a character of color is the love interest. These people aren’t going to change, they’re never going to welcome the voices of fans of color no matter how much the claim they want to. So instead of giving these people any more attention, please reblog and boost the works of fans of color.I feel like I keep shouting this into the void, but to really make fans of color feel welcome in fandom, you have to do more than just call out other white people. Do you follow fans of color? Are you mutuals with any of them? Do you actually consume or have interest in their work? In the characters they create who give insight into their cultural experiences? I cannot tell you at this point how incredibly aggravating I find it when people tell me they appreciate me/my blog because they learn so much from me. Guess what? I’m not here to teach white people. I’m here to try and enjoy the fandom and share my work and get attention for it. Hell, you could just nominate some actual brown folks’ works to this silly business and then push to give them support rather than simply talking YET AGAIN about this racist hose beast’s ugly racist drivel. I see you all saying, over and over again, that you need to do better, and yes, calling out racism is important, and I really do get that you’re trying, but that still puts the spotlight on white people and ignores what fans of color are trying to get, which is acceptance, validation, and interaction with fandom. If you want to help create a welcoming and actually inclusive and enjoyable place for fans of color, try to remember that it requires more than making angry posts about shitty racist fic. This sucks, but let it go and go do something actually positive - make the day of a creator of color by focusing on what they make, and not the work of mediocre bigots. -- source link
