January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States delivered their verdict on Roe v. Wade and thus legalized a woman’s right to an abortion in all fifty States. The decision was just an epicenter for a seismic shift in women’s rights in America. The ruling affected crime, poverty, and conditions of life in the United States for the next few decades as children that would be born to otherwise broken or dangerous circumstances were never had. The ramifications of the Federal government finally realizing a woman had the right to her body was subtle, but the progress was unstoppable. Until July 5, 1993 it was legal in some States (though not all) for a man to rape his wife, we still battle for access to contraceptives, we cannot respect or even acknowledge men who are raped in the thousands each year, and we have not yet come to the notion of equality. We’ll never reach it. Bias begins when we condition ourselves to act a certain way, think a certain way, be a certain way; but more importantly, to make ourselves believe the things we believe are the only ones that are just. The most active of Feminists push their own expectations for how a woman should feel and be. Many people, of all genders, races, ethnicities, and ages feel pressured on several flanks by several parties to behave in tune with their own ideals. There’s an escape in comfort with yourself. If you’re fat and think of yourself as ugly and want to lose weight, you’re not a conformist. If you’re a woman and enjoy being submissive or you don’t support abortion, you’re not stopping progress. If you’re a white man who votes Republican, you’re not marginalizing anyone. If you’re a liberal, Democratic gun owner, you’re not a contradiction. You’re a person, utterly independent, and if you can defend your positions you will earn them. Roe v. Wade was not about women moving a certain direction. It was about having a choice. You deserve a choice, and no one can tell you the right choice. Just remember they also have their choice to criticize you, ridicule you, and belittle you. Let them have it. -- source link
