My little cousin, who is nine years old, is absurdly - and i mean absurdly - similar to Jake. He hasn’t yet officially been diagnosed with ADHD, but has a lot of learning problems in a classroom setting – so much so that his teachers have pushed for him to be put on medication multiple times. But here’s the thing: like Jake, he can understand incredibly deep and insightful concepts in under five seconds and explain it to you in this weirdly-connected way that you’d never have thought to consider it from before. He can focus for LITERAL HOURS on little projects that he finds relevant or important – whether it be writing a song, creating a Lego thing (and he can make intensely cool Lego things out of his own imagination) or just sitting and talking to himself. But. The moment he doesn’t care about something – say, schoolwork - he finds about a gazillion ways to distract himself. He’s ridiculously emotionally perceptive, but he has difficulty fully expressing his emotions in a coherent way.
