SOUNDS. so much like him) #and of course the only way he manages to translate this……too muchness of emotions #(love and rage and pain and greed tightly woven together) #is by turning it into this self-centered desire of appropriation and control #oh my god anakin why are you like this? #(i still can’t get over the fact that they summarized his whole characterization #in one panel and two lines. WOW) (via lagren0uille)#YES #thank you #i feel like the thing a lot of people miss about this character is that even his supposedly redeeming love for luke is…deeply selfish #he cares for luke because he conceives of luke as HIS. as an extension of himself #it’s a love that stems from a sense of ownership - an explicitly dynastic sort of love that seeks to pass on power #‘join me and together we can rule the galaxy’ etc etc #it’s protective but it’s also possessive and obsessive (and very like the way he treated padme by the end) #and as such it does not stand apart from his fascism - it’s PART of his fascism #it always has been. this notion of protecting what is his at literally any cost #and it’s tragic! it’s a tragic twisted grasping sort of love that is driven by fear and loss #but it’s also…a lot less of a positive trait than people often seem to conceive it as #(listen guys i’m sorry but vader loves luke in about the same sense donald trump loves his kids - as projection and reflection of himself #i don’t doubt it’s wholly genuine but it’s still deeply deeply self-centered #i’m sorry to put that image in your head but it’s TRUE) #i mean i think it can be argued that at the very end he does manage to see luke as his own person rather than this sort of… #idealization-as-a-form-of-dehumanization extension of self. that what goodness he has left is moved by luke’s bravery and conviction #i just. feel like it’s impossible to understand this character without understanding that his evil and his care for his loved ones #are not separate things that stand in contrast; they are twisted intimately together and they have been for a long time #that’s the tragedy (via chamerionwrites) -- source link
