Puerta, Monasterio de Roncesvalles, Navarra, Spain, 1998.Only a few meters from this spot, Roland, hero of the medieval French epic poem Le Chanson de Roland, met his end. In my student days, anyone who progressed beyond elementary French was compelled to read bits of the poem and to know the story. Today the monastery marks the beginning of the Camino Francés, the most popular route from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela and provides overnight lodging to pilgrims who have a mere 800 kms. more to walk. -- source link
