unexplained-events:Starchild SkullThe remainder of a supposed entire skeleton, this mysterious skull was found by a young teenager in the 1930s. When she returned the next day to the site of the skeleton, most of it had been washed away in a flood. This skull belonged to a buried skeleton, whose hand bone was attached to the skeleton she had found. It has been officially at around 900 years old, but the strangeness of the skull comes with its appearance. No known diseases or deformities have been able to explain its apperance. The bone is lighter and stronger than that of a human’s, the brain 30% larger, and there is a notable absence of the frontal sinuses. DNA was successfully extracted from the bone, containing 211 base pairs of the FOXP2 gene. The findings ended up putting 56 variations from the human gene from the strange DNA, which is incredible considering even most animals don’t differ from humans that much (a rhesus monkey has 2 different base pairs; a dog, 27). For anything even remotely human, it would not exceed 3.This reads like something sixpenceee would write, but OP happens to be wrong.“No known diseases or deformities have been able to explain its apperance.” Really?! Did you even look?!Please do not peddle pseudoscience and conjecture as fact. Conspiracy theorists (including the late Lloyd Pye) would have you believe that this skull is proof of aliens visiting Earth and creating alien hybrids:Weirdly, despite the ever-decreasing costs of DNA analysis and the numerous anatomical and genetic analyses already completed by professionals, the Starchild Project still needs about $250,000 from you and other “adventurous explorers” to prove their ‘Ancient Aliens’ theory.______________________________________________________According to people who don’t run dodgy websites on the internet, the “Starchild Skull” actually belongs to a Native American boy, NOT an alien or alien-human hybrid. (“Starchild skull” on left, adult human male skull on right)Analysis of DNA recovered from the skull revealed X and Y chromosomes, as well as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), indicating that the boy had a NON-ALIEN mother (source of the mtDNA and X chromosome) and a NON-ALIEN father (hence the Y chromosome). This small but important fact was considered inconvenient by the Starchild Project and therefore ignored. The child’s body was found near that of a woman not his mother. He died around 900 years ago at about age 5, probably due to complications from hydrocephalus, a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain:(Picture of different child, in case you’re wondering)Background: A baby’s skull remains pliable for up to 2 years after birth to allow for brain growth. During this developmental period, external factors can change the shape of the skull and could damage the brain (even factors such as if the baby sleeps on one side more than another). (Click here for hi-res version. You know you want to.)If the ventricles of the baby’s brain become blocked while the skull bones are still fibrous and soft, the cranium can enlarge as cerebrospinal fluid cannot drain correctly and pushes outwards on the brain and skull. Therefore, hydrocephalus in children below age 2 can lead to swelling of the head, as well as seizures and other complications. It is easy to imagine how this condition could have been fatal in a pre-industrial society. Today, neurosurgeons can install a drainage pipe (shunt) to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid into the abdominal cavity. As a result, fewer children die from this condition than ever before.TLDR: This skull did not belong to an alien, but to a very sick child who likely died painfully because there was no cure available to him.For teaching: human anatomy and physiology, neuroscience -- source link
