casadelpoetatragicogplus:To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits: logic and common sense will only interfere. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.— Giorgio de ChiricoBefore surrealism there was scuola metafisica founded by Giorgio de Chirico; he wrote on his self portrait Et quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est? (What shall I love if not the enigma? :)He was an Italian born in Greece in 1888; he studied in Athens, Florence and Munich - after which he came back to Italy : in Florence, on Piazza Santa Croce, he had a revelation which started his Metaphysical Town Square’ series, his metaphysical period for which the surrealists went crazy and for which he remains best known and loved :) He certainly is one of my favourites, if not only for his enigmas, the haunting images of empty streets and arcades, or his many mannequins, then for many very funny self portraits that he painted over the years ;) Buon compleanno, Giorgio :) -- source link
