The Colt Scamp (Small Caliber Machine Pistol)Designed in 1969 the Colt Scamp was conceived as a modernized replacement for the .45 1911. A gas operated locked breech design, the Scamp was conceptualized to be a small caliber pistol with low recoil and a high rate of fire. It featured grips that were based off of those on target pistols, a bore set low over the hand to aid in muzzle climb, and a recoil compensator. It could fire in semi-automatic mode or three round burst and was fed from a 27 round magazine. A new high velocity cartridge was also created specially for the design, the .22 Scamp. The first prototypes were created in 1971. While many were impressed with the design when it was tested, none of the military branches wanted to adopt it. They did not want to drop the venerable .45 1911. -- source link
