Fred Hampton speaking at a rally outside of Cook County Hospital.Referring to the same or similar protest:“Two hundred and fifty supporters of the RYM-II faction of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), RYM (Revolutionary Youth Movement) minus the Weathermen (aka The Weather Underground Organization), gathered outside the Cook County Hospital this afternoon to protest what they called the “anti-people” health care offered at the hospital. Michael Klonsky, national secretary of RYM-II, and Black Panther speakers told the mixed crowd of demonstrators, doctors, and hospital workers that the hospital should provide free medical clinics for the predominantly black neighborhood residents and hire more black hospital employees.” (Harvard Crimson, October 11, 1969)Other sources such as The Guardian (NYC 1948-1992) state the attendance of over 1000 protestors plus hospital staff. During this time, in response to the lack of healthcare for poor people in Chicago, the Panthers would open a network of clinics in North Lawndale and other Black neighborhoods with the aid of Quentin Young, MD, and other volunteer medical students. The Lords and the Patriots followed the Panthers’ model in their own communities. -- source link
