lamus-dworski:11th November : Happy Polish Independence Day! In 1918, after 123 years of partitions and occupations by 3 foreign powers, the Polish state regained independence and reemerged on the maps of Europe. The restoration of Polish state was gradual, and the date of 11th November was chosen as a significant day in that year when the Polish marshal Józef Piłsudski assumed control of Poland. Actual war for the independence continued up until 1921 (read: Polish-Soviet War).Nowadays the Independence Day is celebrated not only as a day of the state’s independence itself, but also to commemorate those who fought during the World War 1 for the freedom of Poland. It corresponds to other countries’ celebrations of Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, or Veterans Day.Sources of images: ckwp.wierzchoslawice.pl, nowahistoria.interia.pl, muzeum.bedzin.pl, powstaniewielkopolskie.pl, krakow.fotopolska.eu -- source link
