mmmmalo:omegapausestuck:mmmmalo:Several tidbits from the part where Jane fails to confess to Jake. This never ceases to bother me… At any point, Jane could have stopped the conversation, reformed her initial admission, and cut out a good 2000 pages of unnecessary torture. Somehow people make all the perils of the alpha kid session out to be the fault of Jake alone, but how could he have even known; considering the circumstances?Counterpoint:Right after Jane says no, Jake undercuts her only attempt to take it back. You could read this as a moment of comedy where Jake BELIEVES Jane’s nervous lie so much he won’t let her doubt herself. Or you could read it as Jake steering the conversation in the direction he prefers, since he follows by saying that Jane’s “no” was a relief that made his romantic life simpler.I think there’s an extent to which Jake hides what he wants behind other people’s desires. Jake gets knocked out by Dirk’s brobot, witnesses Aranea (blue lady > specter of death), and when he wakes up the volcano is bubbling in the background, which tells us he’s into it. While there’s truth to Jake saying that he might just concede to Dirk’s advances, I think Jake is also downplaying his own interest with that phrasing. It’s only when Jane points out that Jake doesn’t HAVE to just let the relationship happen that he admits he’s considered a relationship with Dirk for a long time.Nepeta does something similar during Hivebent, I think: she knows that Terezi has some really dangerous friends, but rather than express her qualms outright, she defers the responsibility to Equius:I think Nepeta and Jake are both avoiding conflict by refusing to own some of their decisions, basically. Jane gave up pretty quickly and committed herself to the Good Friend act, but I think Jake knowingly encourages the process by calling her a good friend over and over and reiterating how much he appreciates being able to talk about Dirk with her.EDIT: Relevant addition from @oceanboydirk:Jake knows Jane likes him romantically and the use of ‘unrequited’ suggests that he doesn’t reciprocate. -- source link
