The Red Threads of Fortune by Jy Yang Rating: 3/5I’m somewhat confused as to why this was billed as a companion novella to The Black Tides of Heaven, as it’s very much a sequel from Mokoya’s perspective. When I heard “companion novella” I was honestly expecting a retelling of events of the first book from Mokoya’s perspective, which I thought would have been fascinating both narratively and creatively. This book also has it’s strengths, but I didn’t find it as strong as its predecessor. There was a lack of world-building in places where I thought the author had a great opportunity to expand–more information about Rider’s culture, for instance, and even more in-depth descriptions of the newly introduced city itself. While I ended up enjoying Rider and Mokoya’s relationship, especially in the wake of what happened to Mokoya, I will admit to feeling pretty blindsided by it at first. I thought the most compelling aspects of this novel were the most human ones, such as the exploration of Mokoya’s reaction to and recovery from the trauma of her daughter’s death. Overall underwhelming and not precisely what I was expecting, but nonetheless well-writtenSong Pairing: Pacific Blues by Sleeping At Last -- source link
