flavoracle:follower-of-liliana:follower-of-liliana:Long ago, when I was trying to figure out an Orzhov mechanic, I came up with the Debt/ Favor mechanic, but in the end I cut it, not because it wasn’t interesting, but because it required a lot of support and that could never work in a setting as busy as a Ravnica set, even a fanmade one. A recent example of such a mechanic is Energy from Kaladesh block. Enough with the history lesson, let’s talk present. A few tweaks here and there and we have Treaty X. Treaty cards always include targeting something or someone, and if your choice ends up helping an opponent, you get to erase some of the commander damage that player dealt to you this game as a reward. The wording is rough around the edges but it opens up design space and it’s the first time I’ve messed around with commander damage, maybe I’m the first to do so. With all that in mind, I implore you, good people, to give me some feedback!Reblogging because for some reason it flew under everyone’s radar. Obedat is elusive but still… :p@flavoracle @the-burnished-hart @magus-of-the-color-pie @legendaryedhplays what’s your take on this?I think that the idea is really interesting, but the current version is hard to grasp, even after multiple readings. I also think that a mechanic specifically aimed at commander damage is too narrow (even for devoted Commander players) and shuts down one of the tools that Commander has for ending games that would otherwise drag on. Having said that, I do really like the flavor of the Treaty mechanic, and I have some thoughts on how I’d change it. I would put on spells and effects that benefit both the player AND target opponent. Then have the player create a number of colorless Treaty enchantment tokens that have “Sacrifice this enchantment: Prevent 1 damage.” So the card above might be changed to… Creatures controlled by you and target opponent gain Lifelink until end of turn. Treaty 4 (Create 4 colorless Treaty enchantment tokens that have “Sacrifice this enchantment: Prevent 1 damage.”) What do you think? I wanted to see if my suggested revamp of the Treaty mechanic would still feel like an Orzhov mechanic in mono-white and mono-black, so I took a crack at trying to make one of each, as well as one more gold card… I’m fairly happy with these three cards, and I think they feel true to the flavor of the Orzhov Syndicate. Having said that, I’m hard pressed to think of very many more, which leads me to think it may be too narrow to be a keyword mechanic. What do you the rest of you think? -- source link
