With this year’s Brooklyn Artists Ball honoring Nick Cave around the corner, I thought I would look into our historic balls to see if anything resonated. The themes of several of our previous balls had to do with material, design, and color, some of the first elements viewers notice about Cave’s works. The conceptual frameworks that underlie his work are much deeper than their materiality and surfaces. Cave’s Soundsuits primarily deal with racial terrorism, identity, and inequality in America. Cave has cited the celebrations and rituals of Mardi Gras, Carnival, and West African dress as sources of inspiration. The past Balls that, to me, resonated with Cave’s practice were the 1965 Festival of the Sun, the 1973 Silver Jubilee Ball, the 1978 Design Galaxy, and the 1988 Cleopatra Gala. This year’s Artists Ball (and After Party) is on April 16th. See you there?Posted by J. E. Molly Seegers -- source link
