Captain Walker L. Boone, Flight Officer Manuel S. Martinez, andFlight Officer Jerry E. Brasher, all of the American 82nd Squadron,78th Fighter Group, sit on the bonnet of a Dodge WC(weapons carrier) at RAF Duxford (October 1943). Duxford’s controltower can be seen in the background. The photo was taken a fewminutes before they left for a bomber escort mission to Germany.Jerry Brasher was one of the pilots who, in January 1944, took partin rescuing a lone B-17 Flying Fortress that had fallen behind itsformation and was under attack. He brought down one of the GermanMesserschmidt 109s:“Using water injection I gained on him, firing all the time, seeingstrikes at the wing roots and behind the cockpit. The enemy aircraftlost speed and chandelled up to the left. I followed firingintermittently and saw him jettison his canopy. I fired anotherburst and he rolled over on his back at about 1,000 feet. I wasabout 800 yards behind at this time. I continued my turn and saw himfloating down in a parachute and his ship hit and burn in a woodedsection. I climbed back to 18,000 feet with my wingman and proceededhome.” -- source link
