Chinese prisoners of war, captured by American troops in northern Korea near the Chosin Reservoir, 1950. During this period of the war, UN troops (mostly American) had entered the fighting and were pushing toward the border between North Korea and China. The new communist regime in China decided, despite just emerging from the Second World War and a terrible civil war against the Guomindang (Nationalists), to enter the war against the United States. Chinese troops used their superior numbers to reverse the American advance, but many of them were ill-equipped for the brutal cold and suffered from frostbite and exposure.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
