We said goodbye to our friend Big Jean this week. Big Jean was a tiny girl with a giant’s heart. We met her for the first time when we fostered her and her even tinier kittens in our home. We noticed her most endearing quality immediately; she began purring as soon as she caught sight of anyone she loved. Her purrs filled the room. We had had several foster cats move through our home, but this one was special. We thought about adopting her, then reluctantly decided against it since we already had a lot to manage. Some other lucky person would get to make her part of their life. She had been nameless when she arrived at our house, so before we took her back to the shelter, we gave a lot of thought to how the world would know her. Her poise, delicate features, white gloves, and boots suggested something like “Miss Jean.“ I worried, though, that Miss Jean wasn’t tough enough for the Big House. Miss Jean seemed like a target for the other inmates. We settled on “Big Jean.” Nobody would mess with a cat named Big Jean. A few weeks after Big Jean left our home, an acquaintance told me the news that a virus swept through the shelter and killed several cats. Without wasting one minute, I called the shelter to see if Big Jean had survived. Within 15 minutes I was there filling out paperwork to adopt her. We never looked back. Big Jean cherished her world and her community. She was an outdoor kitty when we lived in Mass., and she loved napping under the catmint in the neighbors’ garden. She trailed behind us on walks around the block, then tried to duck out of sight when we turned around. When we moved to a busier location, she came indoors with grace. She was masterful at finding the warmest, softest spots in the house. With a tiny chirp she would invite us to share them. “Come have a rest,” she’d say, and we would follow. Big Jean leaves behind a family who loves her and her partner in cat friendship, Teddy. She was preceded in death by her buddy Agnes. She will be remembered by a fan club of family and friends who recognize how special she was. We will miss her.(submitted by @cryptiddies99) -- source link
