With wry humor and caustic irony, the anonymous, gorilla-masked collective Guerrilla Girls has spent decades exposing hypocrisies both in and out of the art world. Their posters such as The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist, which presents the “bright side” of being a woman artist in an art world dominated by men, arrest the viewer with bold lettering. This particular poster circulated in Artforum as an ad, agitated the art world from within a well-read journal. While the poster most directly confronts art world sexism, the message is broad enough to speak to sexism experienced in virtually any field.
