DON’T FEED THE TROLLS: MY STRATEGY FOR TROLL-HANDLINGnoknightsneeded said: Are your trolls getting more active lately, or are you getting more active in exposing their trolling? The answer is both, but with a twist - I’m not sharing those messages to expose trolling.First, I have been getting more “Do we really need feminism” / “why don’t feminists care about ____” / “can you give me examples of sexism” inbox messages. For those writers, this post’s for you.I delete 95-99% of those messages because I know The Golden Rule of blogging, especially feminist blogging: DON’T FEED THE TROLLS. However, sometimes I see a question and it occurs to me, “I have new readers that never saw my response about ______, or my coverage of ______.” In those cases I write a response for the benefit of my readers. For today’s trolling question about “do you only care about white women” - sent to a blog that posts about women of color LITERALLY DAILY - I thought, “it might be useful to my readers to browse the WOC or intersectionality or misogynoir tags on my blog.” That’s the only reason I posted.Here’s another tip for feminist bloggers: LOW LEVEL TROLLS DON’T NEED EXPOSURE, THEY CRAVE EXPOSURE. They are writing you with one or more goals, some more evil than others:Category 1: Pure Evil: Triggering. Threat. Psychological Abuse.Category 2: Less Evil but still indicative of a fucked up patriarchal society: trolling “devil’s advocate” questions. For both category of trolls, deleting their questions in your inbox is fun and worthwhile. They don’t deserve a minute of your time. There are enough people out there who DO care about feminism, or who are interested or curious about feminism. Talk to them. Write for them. Respond to their asks.The trolls worth exposing are the trolls in power - Boss Trolls - in media (Rush Limbaugh, Fox News), in politics (don’t get me started), and the like. Low level trolls get what they deserve - a single click on the Block button.For any trolls that read this far: I leave you with the first troll inbox message I ever received on profeminist, and a general message for all you trolls out there trying to mess with feminists who are literally trying to save lives. -- source link
