Silk summer kimono featuring crickets, grasshoppers, cricket cages and miscanthus grass. Late
Silk summer kimono featuring crickets, grasshoppers, cricket cages and miscanthus grass. Late 19th century, Japan. Yuzen (resist-dyed), embroidery and painted on silk gauze base. “ Insects beloved for their chirping song were sometimes caught or purchased and kept in cages. This robe features a variety of insect cages along with crickets and grasshoppers amid miscanthus grass. Variations in the application of the background dye and scattered glinting areas of gold embroidery convincingly evoke the quality of light at the end of a summer day.” MET Museum (Gift of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, 1937) -- source link
