libraryandarchivesofplay:In 1982, Atari teamed up withDC Comics to create an Atari superhero comic strip, titled Atari Force. Its first series ran for only six issues, with each comic packaged inside its home console game, whereas the second series ran for more than fouryears, with a total of twenty issues. As these memos reveal, inJune of 1982, the developers of Liberator—anAtari space game where players shoot at their enemy’s bases—met withrepresentatives of DC Comics to discuss a possible tie-in between their gameand the developing Atari Force comicbook series. The two groups envisioned a game that would incorporate charactersfrom Atari Force like CommanderChampion, who would assists players as they navigated through the game.Additionally, the collaborators agreed to design the cabinet graphics to highlightthe connection between the comic and arcade game and also feature CommanderChampion artwork on the side panels. DC Comics ultimately agreed to produce aspecial Atari Force comic strip basedon the game. The memo states “The comic strip would then be used as an insertin popular DC comic titles such as TeenTitans.” Unfortunately, Liberator performed poorly during fieldtests to determine whether the game would sell and only 750 machines were produced—despitethe project leader’s suggestion for better marketing (see last memo, datedOctober 11, 1982). The comic book inserts, titled Code Name: Liberator, were produced, however, and included in a 1983 Superman comic book. -- source link
