crownprincesses: Get to know me meme: Favorite Tiaras/Parures [8/10] Queen Victoria’s Sapphire Coronet The coronet - as Victoria used to refer to it - was designed for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in the couple’s wedding year, 1840 and was made by the goldsmith Joseph Kitching. The sapphires - both cushion- and kite-shaped - are set in gold, and the diamonds are set in silver. It was small enough for Victoria to wear it also during her long widowhood. After Victoria passed away, this flexible Gothic design went unseen as Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary focused on larger tiaras. It surfaced again in 1922 when Princess Mary, only daughter of King George V, married Viscount Lascelles - for this occasion she was gifted the coronet and a matching parure. The tiara stayed in the family and was seen in various exhibitions during the 2000s but was later sold to a London dealer and sold again to tycoon William Bollinger, who gifted it to the Victoria&Albert Museum. It is now on dispaly at the V&A London Museum. -- source link
