1847 map of the Tambora volcano on Indonesia’s Sumbawa Island. Tambora erupted in 1815 in an event so violent that the mountain’s height was reduced by 1.5 km in a few days. Tambora ejected so much ash into the atmosphere that it altered the global climate until 1818, reducing temperatures enough to cause the “year without a summer” in the United States and the “hungerjahr” in Germany. Of course, the people suffering all over the world did not understand at the time that their crises had been caused by a faraway volcano. -- source link
