Elbaite on cleavelanditeElbaite is a variety of tourmaline named after the island where Napoleon 1st spent his initial exile before returning to final defeat at Waterloo. Since then it has turned up all over the world, in stunning examples like the lush 21 x 15 x 14 cm piece mined in 2001 in the pegmatite fields of Brazil depicted in the photo. The largest single crystal is 11cm, and the matrix is mostly a variety of sodium rich bright white Albite feldspar with some additional patches of purple lepidolite mica and crystals of quartz.LozImage credit: Joe Budd/Rob Lavinsky/iRocks.com -- source link
