The southern anemone (Phlyctenanthus australis) lives on exposed areas of the #GreatSouthernReef between 1 and 35m. Anemones (Order Actiniaria) are in the class Anthozoa which include corals and sea pens of which there are over 200 species in southern Australia. They have a central body cavity and a central mouth, and hollow tentacles radiating in one or more rows around the mouth. The body is supported by water pressure. The name “Anthozoa” comes from the Greek words ánthos; “flower” and zóa; “animals”, hence (anthozoa) = “flower animals”, a reference to the floral appearance of their perennial polyp stage. #anemone #southernanemone #GreatSouthernReef #DiscoverTasmania #TassieStyle #Australia #underwater #oceans #Instatassie #tassiepics #Tasmania #seeAustralia #Australiagram #ig_australia #Anthozoa (at Tasmania) -- source link
