Marcy sighed deeply as she leaned on the side of the deck and watched the children play. It was Easter Morning, and, as usual, her black owners had retired into the house for breakfast while she was left outside to watch the kids as they hunted for Easter Eggs in the back yard. She’d stayed up all night hiding those eggs and she knew that more than a few of them would be hard for the kids to find. They’d exhaust themselves looking everywhere and they’d come and ask her for help, which she’d gladly give. She loved those kids. Even though they were technically her owners too, she took care of them as if they were her own kids anyway. She fed them, washed them, dressed them, read them bedtime stories, everything their wealthy parents were too busy to do. Watching them play however, made her nostalgic for a time when she was free. She remembered her own youth, living as a free white before the rise of the Black World Order. She remembered getting all dressed up to go to church, big dinners with the whole family and chocolate bunnies with her name on it.It hardly seemed like reality now. Her family had all been enslaved and split up years ago, and she had no idea what had become of any of them, and likely never would. Slaves weren’t allowed in church these days, and even if they were, she hadn’t worn a stitch of clothing in years, so getting dressed up was something of a foreign concept to her now. The chocolate bunny was a possibility though. Maybe if she was good, her masters would treat her, but she wouldn’t count on it.It was a nice morning in any case, one she always looked forward to for the most part. The weather was getting warmer, and that was a blessing in and of itself for her. Long winters were hard on slaves who had to make it through the cold months in nothing but their bare skins. Now that spring was here, it actually felt good to be out in the open, naked in the sun with a warm breeze on her pale skin. The hunt would be over soon. Then she’d have to gather the kids up and get them ready for church. Then she’d have to get started on dinner. That would be a pain. There would be relatives coming over later, making demands on her, ordering her this way and that all night. This was definitely the calm before the storm, and she had decided to enjoy it as much as she could before it was over. -- source link
