Korean Culture - Hanbok (Traditional Korean Clothes) 한국 문화: 한복 [Origins - What is 한복?] 한복 is the traditional dress of Korea, originating as far back as 108BC in the Ancient Gojoseon era. [Anatomy - Parts of the 한복 and Social Class] A typical 한복 is composed of an upper coat (저고리) accompanied by either pants/trousers (바지; worn by men) or a skirt (치마; worn by women). Parts of the 한복 (including color and details) differ from social class to social class. Commoners typically wore simple, white woolen clothing with wider sleeves for comfort while working as many of their occupations consisted of physical labor. In contrast, aristocrats or nobles (양반), wore more fitted clothing (probably because they could actually afford tailored clothing) with a variety of colors and patterns that exhibited levels of wealth. Men could wear belts (such as the King) and women often wore elaborate hairpins and colorful tassels. Nobility and royal clothing was also made using finer quality materials such as silk.
