Rick Houses, Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardstown, Kentucky, 2014.Barrels of bourbon, a small fortune’s worth, are aging in these 7- 8 story buildings made mostly of wood. The day we visited there was a thunderstorm alert, and we had to evacuate during a tour. While reasonably well protected with lightning rods, the combination of wood and alcohol could prove explosive if one of the buildings ignited. That means the buildings are spaced far apart so that a fire in one would not readily spread to another one.I am not a great bourbon fan, but it was interesting to learn how the liquor is manufactured and aged and why some of it sells for upwards of $300 a bottle. The post tour tasting session was also enjoyable. -- source link
