Mirèio is a poem by Frédéric Mistral written in Provençal, a variant of the Occitan language which is native to the South of France. In 1830, Mistral was born in Maillane, Provence, France, a town where Provençal was spoken widely. After law school, Mistral wrote several Provençal language poems and founded Félibrige, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Occitan. Through Félibrige, he published a French-Provençal dual language dictionary called Trésor du Félibrige. Today, Provence natives speak French, but Félibrige is still an active organization with headquarters in Aix-en-Provence.This copy of Mirèio (Mireille in French) is in French and Provençal. The first page of the poem shows the French translation in larger font and the original Provençal text beneath.Image from: Frédéric Mistral’s Mireille: poème provençal.
