He was attacked on October 6th 1977 and died in hospital 10 days later.Miquel Grau was a Valencian young man from Alacant (Valencian Country). On the night of October 6th, he was with his friends and comrades posting posters for October 9th (Valencia’s national day). On the 9th, there would be a demonstration asking for rights for the Valencian Country and a greater degree of autonomy (“l’Estatut”: a statute of autonomy). Even though Spain had always oppressed the cultures it has invaded, going as far to banning our languages and certain aspects of our cultures (like songs and dances) with the ultimate objective of eliminating us and imposing a homogenous Spanish culture, Franco’s fascist dictatorship (1939-1978) was especially harsh in this. Torture, prison, and even death sentences were common for people who defended the rights of national minorities, let alone go as far as to ask for independence.As they were posting notices calling for protest, a fascist called Miguel Ángel Panadero Sandoval threw two buckets of water over Miquel and his friends. Then, he threw a flowerpot and finally a brick at Miquel’s head.Miguel Ángel Panadero Sandoval was a member of the fascist and Spanish supremacist organization Fuerza Nueva, and he confessed to having killed Miquel Grau because he couldn’t stand seeing posters for Valencian national day.Panadero was sentenced to 12 years and 1 day of jail for murdering Miquel Grau, but he didn’t fulfill his sentence. Instead, he was freed in 1982 after the Minister of Justice of the Spanish Government granted a partial pardon to the fascist killer, whose sentence was reduced by half.This was only one of the many, many violent actions committed by fascists and neo-nazis against Valencian antifascists. -- source link
