A croft house on marginal land…Algy’s friend The Glumsh @glumshie also very kindly submitted this archive photograph from the collection of Dr. Isabel F. Grant in the Edinburgh Central Library for Algy’s celebration of Scotland today. The caption is self-explanatory, but there is much more to this than meets the eye, for this photo is believed to show the (apparently very much smartened-up) black house and (probable) sheds which stood on the ground where Algy’s assistant’s house, built in the mid-1930s, stands today. However, although the approximate location is definitely correct, as the distinctive shape of the ridge behind the house confirms, Algy is not absolutely convinced that this is the very spot, because the lie of the land in the foreground does not seem quite right. But some aspects of the arrangement of the buildings, not to mention the presence of stones and the remains of former walls in Algy’s assistant’s present-day garden, suggest that it is possible but not certain. But in any case it is a fine photo of an improved black house, with especially good detail of the thatched roof and chimeys. The date of the photo is unknown, but it was taken sometime in the early 20th century, probably in the late 1920s or very early 1930s!This weekend, to mark the occasion of an important Scottish parliamentary election, Algy is reblogging images and other media related to Scotland here on @lovefromalgy … so if you have any original photos or other material with a Scottish theme - ancient or modern - that you would like Algy to share, please send him a link, or mention @adventuresofalgy or @lovefromalgy in your post, or use the lovefromalgy submission form. -- source link
