After a one month hiatus in observance of the New York Caribbean Carnival Parade, First Saturday is back just in time to celebrate the resilience and power of the Latinx diaspora. We’re celebrating the theme Beyond Borders in recognition of the ways we’ve historically transcended borders and boundaries and invite everyone to honor the past, present, and future of Latinx art and culture. Start the night with Grammy-nominated band Locos por Juana and participate in a community talk on mobilizing for immigrant rights with Movimiento Cosecha. We’ll also be collecting supplies to support hurricane relief in Puerto Rico and invite visitors to bring supplies such as batteries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. At 7, our friends at Little Cinema are serving up an immersive, interactive screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s genre-bending cult-classic The Holy Mountain while Balmir Latin Dance Company hosts a Salsa Party complete with lessons, social dancing and performances that celebrate the diversity of Latin dance worldwide. Art lovers can hop on an exclusive tour of our new exhibition Proof: Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein, Robert Longo with Sara Softness, or join the Brooklyn Museum Teen Apprentices for bilingual talks on artworks that honor Latinx culture.Last but not least, DJ and producer Geko Jones, dancer La Chiquita Brujita, and MC Nitty Scott end the night with a tribute to tropical music from across the globe that has found its home here in Brooklyn. If that’s not enough, we’ll have happy hour specials all night and our galleries are open late. Visit here for a full lineup y nos vemos pronto!Posted by Lauren A. Zelaya -- source link
