August 2015 - Rumi and the RiverFor perspective, just to the left of Rumi there’s a ~8′ dropoff down into the water. He has pointedly gotten in between the river and myself. The river really freaks Rumi out. He hates it when we go near it. It’s the only time he really goes into protective mode, but he goes full blast. When we’re in the water, he runs alongside on the bank, crying at us. One time my BFF visited and brought her son, we were all in the river and Rumi was most concerned about her son of us all and I thought he was going to truly lose his shit, hyperventilating and meowing. He only calms down when we get out and away from the water, and he tries to lead us away from it as quickly as possible. It’s not just any water either, he is not bothered by our various little miniponds or by rain or anything like that. It’s definitely the river. He prefers us nowhere near it. I’ve never known a cat to have this kind of reaction, but cats have dramatically distinct personalities.I lectured Rumi that he should view Bigness as a mentor, and I told Bigness that she should teach Rumi her ways. They spend a lot of time outside together now, usually with him trailing around after her, when they are not otherwise lounging near each other. It’s taken a few years, but despite Bigness becoming crankier in old age, she has totally accepted him. -- source link
