In 1581, Doctor John Dee took it upon himself to discover the language of God and His angels. In his journals, he discusses the possibility of revealing the tongue (and magic) of the angels that had been sent to communicate with prophets, as well as the language Adam (the first man according to Judeo-Christian religion) spoke to God with and named all the animals on Earth. Dee theorized that after Adam’s fall from grace and expulsion from the Garden of Eden, he forgot Enochian and created a pre-Hebrew language as close as he could to Enochian. This infant form of Hebrew was the “universal language” for all humans of Earth until the Confusion of Tongues where all the different human languages were developed.Dee also theorized that this language of the angels was hidden from humanity for many years, until it was revealed to the prophet Enoch who wrote a book of this information titled The Book of Laogaeth, which would be lost Noah’s Flood.Today, this language is used to make contact and command various spirits and is an integral part of Enochian Magick. However, the validity of the conception and discovery of this language has been questioned since it’s re-discovery in the late twentieth century to today.John Dee was a massively popular and well educated man of England - unfortunately, his interest in (what we now consider) the occult did land him in trouble in 1555 when he was arrested for plotting to overthrow Queen Mary. He would lead a relatively quiet life from this point, likely to try and avoid having any attention called to himself. Luckily for Dee, he was in Queen Elizabeth’s favor, and managed to avoid being burned at the sake by providing her with horoscopes, intelligence reports (he was known to her as 007) and other spiritual information. In 1581, Dr. John Dee he began scyring in crystal balls as a means of contacting Heaven. Not being a medium himself, he hired convicted felon Edward Kelley (alias Edward Talbot) who presented himself with the ability for astral vision. Dee’s wife, Jane, deplored the angry and rebellious Kelley and begged her husband to be rid of him before Kelley ruined Dee’s name. Dee however, had great faith and believed Kelley’s abilities completely, despite his coarse disposition. The two would hold scrying sessions together, and ended up traveling all over Europe in an attempt to find a new patron and investor. One of the last of these sessions, which were called the Angels Conversations, was with the angels telling Kelley the two men should engage in a wife-swapping session. Dee, convinced the angels had told Kelley the truth and there would be no spiritual cost to the families, the “swap” occurred in May of 1587. This is never mentioned again in Dee’s journals or diaries. Soon after, Kelley would move on to other ventures and Dee would do the same, though Dee would continue to dabble in magic for the rest of his life.Enochian and Enochian Magick was first used most extensively in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was likely adopted into the group after being discovered by one of it’s founders by accident. However, the founders decidedly skipped great portions of the Dee’s records and changed up parts to fit to their tastes and needs. Many of their practices were based on Dee’s Enochian system, despite not having all his materials and making alterations. Members of this group included famous figures like William Yates, Bram Stoker and the occultist Edward Alexander “Aleister” Crowley. As to wether the language/magical system and conversations with angels were entirely faked by Kelley or not, one must consider if Kelley had the means and ability to do so. Kelley had a partial formal education (he had begun college, but had left) and was able to speak Latin in addition to English. Kelley did receive one message in Greek (though the angel had said it was in delivered to Kelley in Syriac) and he also performed the Enochian calls in Hungarian. Aside from this, the messages received from the angels were never out of Kelley’s ability. Kelley also had access to Dee’s personal library which was very extensive and had a great deal of books concerning magic, mysticism, mythology, demonology and more. It is also important to note, that most of the predictions and premonitions imparted onto Kelley by the angels never came true. In fact, 1/3 of the early prophecies were even contradicted by later prophecies. The language itself was often revised and altered repeatedly, by the angels. Not to mention that Kelley was not the most saintly person, in comparison to the pious John Dee who would never speak directly with the angels.Though there are major inconsistencies with Kelley’s Conversations, there are some unexplained aspects to these sessions. Dee himself claimed to have felt strange forces (pinching, pulling, etc.) and see bruises and marks on Kelley’s body when the two had contacted an evil or demonic spirit. Most in favor of Kelley’s reliability is the sheer complexity of the Enochian system and language, despite its grammatical and syntax problems - if Kelley had created the system, he would have had to been an extremely clever man. -- source link
