Never Let Go So far, we’ve introduced a face-opening fiend, a weird watcher, and a cloaked corpse-consumer, in the spirit of under-sea Halloween. Now, we present to you a deep sea death-dealer—the viperfish (Chauliodus spp.) The impressive teeth of the viperfish are well-adapted to hunting the various prey items it feeds on (such as crustaceans, cephalopods, and fishes). The long front teeth are like harpoons, piercing and rending prey, and drawing it into the mouth. The inner teeth are like daggers, digging into the prey and holding it steady. With its mouth closed, the massive teeth of the viperfish form a cage that prevents prey from escaping. Image source: Dante Fenolio Reference: Greven et al. 2009. -- source link
