chrisalexthomas:fates0end:chrisalexthomas:robotlyra:jackscarab:(x)This is important content cuz it touches on one of the more overlooked aspects of the recent altright encroachment: a lot of it is about doing it “for the lulz”. Making traditionally marginalized groups angry or reactive is a form of entertainment for some, and the fact that happens to work towards reclaiming white male supremacy for them is more of a secondary bonus. That’s what makes it so difficult to logically or “correctly” combat it; the most forward face isn’t an ideology or philosophy, so to speak, but rather a form of indulgence. It’s not a grand mission, it’s a game they play. There is a big difference between geek culture and culture which has geeks in it, just because they appear the same, doesnt mean they are the same and this is a ridiculous conflation that she thinks they are the same because they are predominantly white straight males…..what a load of bullshit and its fucking dangerous bullshit too, because people might start targetting people for raids and doxxing just because they are a geek, suddenly they are being conflated with and mislabelled as alt-right!!!I’m glad this has been touched upon, because now I can talk about the culture it actually descended from, *chan culture. Specifically, a corruption of the most hostile part of it. From the beginning, *chan culture has been crude. However, back around the beginning, this was a lot of people with moderate to liberal views using slurs because they believed them to be just words, and not because of any actual hatred, and posting illegal content because they could, not because they actually liked it. These people still exist, but they’re a faction, not the overwhelming majority.*chan culture has always been prone to splintering and fictionalizing; even back in 2006, a large group of 4channers splintered off to their own *chan (the first non-4chan chan, in fact) after the moderators added a rule to the formerly ruleless /b/ - Random board (specifically, no illegal content.)The markers of the altright’s origin in the *chans is obvious, if you know where to look. “Lulz”, “doxxing”, and “raids” were all originally *chan terms; “pepe” was a popular 4chan meme, although back then it was “sadfrog” and “happyfrog”. “Cuck”, however, is an altright original.I believe that it’s origins can be traced to the original “Gaiaf*gs”; people (who were often believed to have arrived from internet game Gaia Online) who didn’t actually understand *chan culture, but tried very hard to imitate the native posters in an attempt to fit in. Similarly, I think that the altright is the result of many waves of bigoted people who arrived to a *chan, saw the crude language, and, thinking than *channers actually meant it, settled in, believing themselves to be among like-minded people. Of course, there’s something to be said to the theory that *chan culture is inherently a counterculture; back when *channers raided and riled up a bigoted conservative talk radio host for fun and staged a global mass protest of Scientology was a time where the US (the home of the majority of *chan users), relatively speaking, was rather conservative; nowadays, it is much more liberal, and I’ve heard it argued that the shift towards the right is simply a reaction to that.. 4chan’s /pol/ board is altright HQ nowadays, along with r/the_donald. Though I have to express that its users are a faction of *channers and not fully representative of the whole; a great deal of *channers (including me. Surprise!) hate /pol/ users, not the least for their tendency to come on to other boards and shout BUT DA JOOS or BUT BLACK PEOPLE.As a side note, the relation to Gamergate is not descendence, but rather kinship; both misogynistic side and the actually-concerned-with-journalistic-integrity side started in 4chan.Fucking bingo! Exactly! It has nothing to do with geeks, it started with the corruption of the chan* culture, I was there on those boards back in the days and saw the level of shit people were capable of doing and bailed, didnt wanna be anywhere near that hornets nest, you put into words what I couldnt, thank you! -- source link
